Comprehension, Grades 3-6
Many experts refer to the 6 major comprehension strategies: connecting, questioning, predicting, imaging/visualizing, inferring, and synthesizing. 95 Percent Group’s Comprehension, Grades 3-6 teaches these strategies in the order listed above and shown graphically on the Comprehension Continuum.
Since comprehension occurs in the mind of the reader, it’s very difficult for students to see what a skilled reader is doing when making sense of text, that’s why using a “think-aloud” approach is very important when modeling for students. Readers are provided opportunities to practice each strategy until mastery with both literary and informational text.
Instruct students in the seven processes essential for text comprehension.
